Sarcopenia - An Update and a Model for Primary Care & Abbott Strength Clinic Program

The talk will begin with an overview of sarcopenia, highlighting its prevalence, implications for mobility, independence, and quality of life. The discussion will incorporate both global figures and Singapore-specific statistics to underline its significance in our local healthcare landscape. Emphasis will be placed on the role of sarcopenia as a contributor to frailty and increased healthcare burdens in older adults.

Following the introduction, the session will delve into strategies to combat sarcopenia at the primary care level. A brief overview of a new program designed to screen and manage sarcopenia in elderly patients will be presented. This initiative aims to empower primary care providers to identify at-risk individuals early and implement evidence-based interventions that include physical activity, resistance training, and dietary modifications.

The talk will conclude by emphasizing the importance of an integrated approach to sarcopenia management, combining early screening, targeted interventions, and nutritional support. Attendees will leave with actionable knowledge to help mitigate the effects of sarcopenia and improve the well-being of elderly patients in their care. This continuing medical education talk aims to equip healthcare professionals with the tools and insights needed to tackle sarcopenia effectively, both globally and locally. By addressing the condition through evidence-based strategies, we can offer hope and improved quality of life to our aging population.

Sarcopenia, the age-related loss of muscle mass and function, is a pressing issue among Singapore's aging population, leading to frailty, reduced mobility, and higher healthcare costs. Oral nutritional supplements (ONS) are vital in addressing sarcopenia, providing protein, vitamins, and essential nutrients to preserve muscle health.

In Singapore, where 20% of the population will be aged 65+ by 2030, ONS programs tailored to elderly needs are crucial. These programs improve dietary intake, combat malnutrition, and promote independence. GP-led care within the GP+ Co-operative focuses on screening for sarcopenia, prescribing ONS based on individual needs, and ensuring regular follow-ups to optimize health outcomes.

Despite challenges like costs and lack of awareness, opportunities exist to enhance ONS accessibility, educate caregivers, and foster collaboration across healthcare sectors. By integrating nutrition with primary care, initiatives such as the GP+ Co-operative pave the way for better elderly care. Addressing sarcopenia through ONS programs can significantly improve quality of life, setting a benchmark for comprehensive care in Singapore.

Sarcopenia and sarcopenic obesity are the underlying cause to many metabolic conditions and prelude to frailty and falls and fracture.

In order to truly prevent chronic diseases and promote independent living in order to extend health span, it is important to tackle the issues at its root.

This talk will equip the attendees to be familiar with the reasons behind the importance of nutrition among the elderlies. It also helps the clinic and family physicians to start discussing and managing sarcopenia and obesity in their clinics.
