Synopsis:

  • Sarcopenia, the age-related loss of muscle mass and function, is a pressing issue among Singapore's aging population, leading to frailty, reduced mobility, and higher healthcare costs. Oral nutritional supplements (ONS) are vital in addressing sarcopenia, providing protein, vitamins, and essential nutrients to preserve muscle health.

In Singapore, where 20% of the population will be aged 65+ by 2030, ONS programs tailored to elderly needs are crucial. These programs improve dietary intake, combat malnutrition, and promote independence. GP-led care within the GP+ Co-operative focuses on screening for sarcopenia, prescribing ONS based on individual needs, and ensuring regular follow-ups to optimize health outcomes.

Despite challenges like costs and lack of awareness, opportunities exist to enhance ONS accessibility, educatecaregivers, and foster collaboration across healthcare sectors. By integrating nutrition with primary care, initiatives such as the GP+ Co-operative pave the way for better elderly care. Addressing sarcopenia through ONS programs can significantly improve quality of life, setting a benchmark for comprehensive care in Singapore.
